Jammes, Francis
(1868-1938)
   writer
Born in Tournay, Hautes-Pyrénées, Francis Jammes is inseparable from his regional birthplace of Béarn in the Basque country, where he set his works. in his first collection, De l'Angélus de l'aube à l'Angélus du soir (1898), he established the tone and style of his writings with the same fervid lyricism being present in such subsequent pieces as Clara d'El-lébeuse (1899), Almaïde d'Étremont (1901), Le Deuil des primevères (1901), and Le Triomphe de la vie (1902). His close friendship with paul claudel inspired Jammes's return to Catholicism. Becoming over the years a type of rustic patriarchal figure, he was opposed to new literary currents, especially in poetry. Jammes carried on a correspondence with several other writers, including colette and André Gide, that has been published.
